Using the CIT Discord Server#

The CIT Discord server is where course access, announcements, office hours, and help tickets are coordinated.

The current course syllabus and applicable CSN or college policies take precedence over anything on this website.

For class channel access, use the /register bot command after your Bellagio Linux account has been activated or updated for the current semester. Opening a help ticket should be a last resort for registration problems.

Joining the server#

Use the Discord invitation link provided in the current course syllabus, Canvas shell, or official course announcement.

Channel information#

Refer to the information on the server for the most current channel usage.

Announcements#

Important updates regarding the CIT community, the server, and other information are posted in the Announcements channel.

Class channel access#

Class channel access is assigned by Discord roles. A bot on the server assigns those roles after your Bellagio Linux account has been activated or updated for the current semester.

If your account has not been created or updated yet, registration may fail even if you are enrolled in the course.

To self-assign your class roles:

  1. Use the registration command described in the Discord server instructions.
  2. Enter only the information requested by the bot.
  3. Submit the command.
  4. Watch for the bot’s confirmation message.

After successful registration, your assigned class channels will be available in the Discord server.

General discussion#

Use general-discussion for discussion that is not specific to CIT course material.

Class channels#

After you complete /register, you will be given access to the course channels connected to your Bellagio Linux account groups. These channels appear under the Classes category after access is granted.

Office hours channels#

Weekly TA and instructor office-hour schedules are posted in office-hour-times.

Use office-hours for communication related to office hours.

Voice channels#

There are three offices for one-on-one meetings with a TA or instructor:

  • TA Office 1
  • TA Office 2
  • TA Office 3

There are two meeting rooms for group meetings or conferences:

  • Meeting Room 1
  • Meeting Room 2

Help tickets#

Open a help ticket when /register fails after your Bellagio Linux account has been activated or updated for the current semester. A common cause of registration errors is trying to register before current-semester account updates are complete.

For registration help or other non-homework technical issues, use the ticket system inside Discord and choose a brief subject such as Issue with registration. This creates a private channel where you can describe the problem in detail.

You may also open a help ticket for connection problems, Bellagio account problems, VS Code setup, or other private technical access issues.

Do not open a help ticket for ordinary homework or debugging questions. For homework help, post a question in the appropriate course Discord channel without posting your actual code, visit a teaching assistant or instructor during scheduled office hours, or contact me privately. A direct message is usually the most expedient way to reach me; email may be delayed.
